Betty Jean (Laurence) Holdridge, age 89 years, 10 months and 3 days, died April 17, 2020, at her daughter's home, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born in Breckenridge, Texas on June 14, 1930, to the late Willie and Alla (Eatherton) Laurence. She graduated from Breckenridge High School and Texas Christian University. After college, Betty returned home, where she soon met and married, the late James R. Holdridge, the handsome young pastor of a nearby Methodist Church. He proposed to her one night after the District Minister's Christmas Party and they married on March 2, 1953. After serving Churches in Texas, and having two daughters, they moved to Kansas where their third daughter was born. There, Betty began a career as a social worker. The family returned to Texas in 1974, settling in Abilene. Betty retired as a Child Protective Services Worker with State of Texas in 1992. A few years later she moved to Ohio to be closer to her youngest daughter and help care for her youngest grandchildren. Her goal was to stay healthy long enough to "get those kids to kindergarten." She lived to see them both finish high school.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents and her brother. She is survived by her loving daughters: Cynthia Smith of Starkville, MS, Linda Kohler of Berkeley, CA, and Cheri Holdridge and her husband Kurt Young, of Toledo, OH; her beloved grandchildren: Aaron, Megan, Sara, Jessica, Rebecca, and James; and her great-grandchildren: Major, Miles, Solae and Madilyn Bettyjean.
Memorials may be sent to: Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W. Central Ave, Toledo, Ohio 43615. A graveside service will be held in Texas at a later date.
