Helga Hedwig Hopps
Helga Hedwig (Ramming) Hopps, age 81, passed away peacefully at home with her family on May 23, 2021.
Helga was born on September 23, 1939 in East Berlin, Germany, the month World War II began. Her first five years were spent in a war-torn country. After the war, Helga was evacuated to Switzerland where she lived with a family who restored her to health. Helga returned to her family in East Berlin and eventually began working in West Berlin. With concerns over potential border closures in 1961, Helga did not return home to her family but remained in West Berlin. From there, she ventured back to Switzerland, then crossed the Atlantic to the US, and eventually settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she worked as an office manager for a manufacturer of machines that fill beer bottles.
Helga had a distinct passion for travel and explored most of the world's continents. She was fascinated by different cultures and was proficient in 4 languages. Helga took great pride in her home, appreciating order and attention to detail. She was a feisty woman with tremendous work ethic and resolve.
Helga is survived by her one and only child, Carin V Hopps, MD, and by her grandchildren, the loves of her life, Claire (13) and Jack (10), whom she so adored. The family wholeheartedly thanks the staff of Alexis Gardens and Senior Helpers for enriching the past three years of Helga's life and ProMedica Hospice for providing respect, comfort, and dignity in the past month.
In memory of Helga, the family has established a scholarship fund in her name at Meadow Montessori School in Monroe, Michigan, to which donations in honor of her life are welcome. A private gathering will be held to celebrate the life of HHH at a later date.
