Obituary

Rev. Jerry Lathan was the third born child of ten to the union of James Henry Lathan, Sr. and Ruthie Mae Lathan (both preceded him in death) on December 24, 1957 in Saline, MI. Jerry completed his life of 63 years on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at approximately 1:00pm at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Norwalk, OH. Jerry attended Dundee Community Schools from Kindergarten to High School. While there, he excelled in sports, specifically Football, where he was one of the school's star Running Backs. As Jerry neared graduation, he had other plans and dropped out of high school just months before graduation. After a brief talk with Mom and Dad, Jerry completed his GED and signed up to be enlisted into the Armed Forces. In April of 1982, Jerry enlisted into the Army and remained active until his separation in 1986. During his active service, Jerry completed his Basic Training in Fort Knox, KY, and was stationed in Tacoma, WA, Seattle, WA, Fort Lewis in Pierce, WA, Korea and Honolulu, HI. Jerry was born and raised in the Spiritual Israel Church & Its Army, where at the age of 13, he was called to the ministry along with his best friend, Harvey Beavers, Jr. by the late Bishop Allen Cox, Jr. at the Milan, Mission. Together, they were a powerful tag team duo, preaching the doctrine of Israel and inspiring many souls. Jerry worked several jobs before and after his enlistment into the Army. In 1977 he was employed at Ford Motor Company in Monroe, MI. Then moved on to the United Way in Monroe, MI in 1979. After his separation from the Army in 1986, Jerry was hired in at the Mazda Plant in Flat Rock, MI and finally landing a position at North Star Steel in Monroe, MI as a Billet Coordinator, where he retired from in 1997. Jerry married early in life, marrying Tonya Patterson in 1977, and from that union his first daughter, Richelle was born. They divorced a year later and in 1979 he met Vernice Windless, and they were united in marriage in 1982. From this union he adopted Katrenia, Walter and Latwan Windless and born into this union Jerry Windless and Jerome Lathan. Jerry was able to take his whole family with him to a few of the states he was stationed in towards the end of his tenure in the Army. Jerry and Vernice divorced in 1995 and after a few other relationships, Jerry met Kathy Harris and she became his significant other until a few months before his passing. Jerry had a love for old cars and motorcycles. He would fix them up, tear them up, and fix them back up again. He loved fishing, gardening, training dogs, grilling, eating fried chicken, spending time with his children and grandchildren, listening to old school music, and making everyone around him laugh. His laugh was definitely infectious. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters; Bernadine Lathan at birth and Charlene Page, brother; Jesse Lathan, brother- in-laws Kenneth Page, Sr. and Morris Easley, Sr., and daughter, Bernadine Lathan who also died at birth.
