John C. Cathers Jr. age 60 of Toledo, Ohio passed away December 20th 2014 surrounded by his family and friends. John C. Cathers Jr. was born May 15th, 1954 in Toledo, Ohio to parents John (Jack) and Dorothy Cathers. A loving son and sibling John was fiercely loyal to his family and friends from the very start. He loved to have fun, play poker, take trips to the lake, camp at Sonny's Campground, and find all sorts of other trouble to get into with his siblings. He was also a business man … He always seemed to be selling something, or trying to invest in the next big thing. However, John Cathers Jr. was a rare gem; he was a business man with a heart of gold, a person willing to give you the shirt off his back. John was well known for his generosity and compassion; which is why a career with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities seemed a perfect fit for him. John was a caregiver for Raymond "Dwight" Oden for over twenty years; much of that time giving 24 hour care. John and Dwight were best friends who went everywhere together. They literally cruised from the streets of Toledo all the way to the Bahamas; and back again. John was best known to many as "Beer Man John" throughout the decades he worked as a beer vender for a variety of teams, associations, and local landmarks including: the Toledo Mud Hens, Toledo Storm Hockey, and other special events at the Toledo Sports Arena and the Toledo Speedway. John also raced horses at Toledo's Raceway Park and various fairgrounds. John was preceded in death by his wife Mary, parents John Sr. and Dorothy Cathers, brothers Gilbert and David Cathers, and sister Sandra (Sam) Cutshaw. John is survived by brothers Rodney (Cathy) and Jim (Virginia) Cathers and sisters Connie (Bob) Alsip, Judy Bland, and Rose (Glenn) Chambers, brother-in-law Calvin Cutshaw, goddaughter Nikki Alsip, and many nieces and nephews. Throughout his sixty years with us John brought a uniqueness that cannot be compared with any other. Though he is not with us in the same way anymore; we can always be thankful for the generous legacy he left behind. He was a man who wore his heart on his sleeve; and who touched thousands of lives with his loving words and generous actions. John cannot be thought of without an instant image or sound byte of Loretta Lynn, Ohio State football, The Wizard of Oz, beautiful horses, or one of the many sports venues of Toledo. Beyond all these wonderful traits, John was also a man who loved God and his church dearly. He was a regular participant and cheerleader at many of their events; prayer was a daily part of his life. He left us so many connections that can be used to remember him during this time. A memorial service will be held at Perrysburg Alliance Church at 10401 Avenue Rd. Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 at11:00am on Saturday January 3rd, 2015 with a luncheon to follow. Family wishes gifts in John's memory can be made to Perrysburg Alliance Church.
