Obituary

The family of Joseph Anthony Tore is deeply saddened to announce his death on June 20, 2026, after a long and debilitating illness. Joe was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 24, 1962, to Attillio and Mary (Perry) Tore. He earned his Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Cincinnati and worked for Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) until he decided that what he really wanted to do was be a doctor. In 1994, Joe and his family moved to Toledo so that he could attend the Medical College of Ohio (MCO). After graduation, he continued at MCO as an anesthesiology resident. Life dealt him many hardships, and Joe ultimately returned to engineering before pursuing one more academic venture at the University of Toledo, where he earned his Executive MBA.

A lifelong Cincinnati sports fan, Joe loved both the Bengals and the Reds, and considered himself extremely lucky to grow up during the era of the Big Red Machine. More recently, he was elated when another talented Joe became the Bengals' quarterback in 2020, restoring hope for diehard fans like himself. He shared sports trivia and anecdotes every chance he got, to anyone who would listen, which usually included his art school-attending daughters and Victorian literature-loving wife, much to their dismay. He joked that his fetch-obsessed Golden Retriever, Gil, was the athlete son he never had, though he thoroughly enjoyed being a girl dad.

More than anything, Joe wanted to be a good dad. He loved every minute of make-believe, silliness, and singing his personal rendition of "Desperado" as a lullaby, and he took every eye roll as an "I love you." In Joe's version, instead of riding fences, DesBearado was out chasing kitties, much to the delight of his young listeners.

Joe enjoyed camping and hiking with his family and dogs, especially at the beautiful Red River Gorge in Eastern Kentucky. He called himself the "Alpha Dingo" and gladly sacrificed his own comfort to ensure that the dogs were engaged and pleasantly exhausted. These trips were extensions of the "dadventures" Joe took with his dogs, with the bonus of cave exploration, creek-stomping, campfires, star-gazing, and amazing scenery. He loved both the beauty and the science of nature, and his eyes lit up when sharing amazing facts that he learned about astronomy and the universe, but most important to him were the people and animals in his universe.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 38 years, Elizabeth (Brogan), their daughters Hilary and Micaela, and his beloved dogs: Gil, Lottie, Moira Rose, and sweet kitty, Marmee. Joe wanted the world to know that he was tough and that he never gave up. We will remember Joe for his quick wit and amazing smile, ridiculously smart scientific brain, secret messages in peanut butter, man-crush on Captain Kirk, love of The Beatles and The Who, and his sentimental heart. We take comfort in knowing that Sophie, Ellie Mae, Gertie Bird, and Izzy Bee were waiting for him on the other side of the bridge, ready for the ultimate pack walk.

Joe will be remembered privately by those who loved him, with an informal celebration of his life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations to Toledo Animal Rescue (TAR) in Joe's memory.
