Lawrence B. "Larry" McCartney 88 passed away peacefully at his home with his wife and children by his side. Larry was born on July 23, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Richard F. and Lucille (Berry) McCartney. Larry grew up on a 25 acre horse farm and participated in many local rodeos. Before graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1950 he won a Golden Gloves Tournament in Toledo, Ohio. He took his boxing talent to the United States Navy in 1951 (1951-55) serving on the USS Exploit during the Korean War. In 1952 he married Grace Haupricht and had six children. Larry fought well over 60 bouts and winning numerous Golden Glove Championships. He held the title of Mid-Atlantic Champion throughout his naval career. In 1952 he was an alternate for the USA Olympic team he also appeared on the television show "Meet the Champ" in Bainbridge, Maryland. He turned professional in 1953 fighting under the professional name of "Eddie O'Dowd". He was very successful fighting over 29 bouts appearing on fight cards in many cities including Madison Square Gardens. In1971 Larry joined the Cement Mason Local 886 where he also taught the apprenticeship program. After his wife Grace passed away (1971) he married Joanne Robarge (1972). With Joanne at his side he pursued his lifelong dream of owning and training thoroughbred racehorses lasting over 25 years and winning several handicap races in Cleveland, Ohio. Larry was an avid golfer, lover of billiards, and of course if you were dealing some cards he was in! In addition to his parent s Larry is preceded in death by his first wife Grace (Haupricht), son Peter Lawrence McCartney, grandson Sean Kelly McCartney, brothers William (Alice), Richard (Phyllis), Robert (Francis), sisters Patricia McCartney and Kathryn (Vic) Pollock. He is survived by his wife Joanne (Robarge), his children Thomas P. McCartney, Kelly J. McCartney, daughters Kay (Tracy) Burger, Patricia (Randy) Damon and Debra (Clint) McBee sisters Nan (Larry) Reno and Susan (Ken) Pool. Larry was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. We would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Cathy Cigallio for all of their help during Larry's illness. Their kindness is so much appreciated. Services will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at St. Clements Church 3030 Tremainsville Road Toledo Ohio 43613. Rosary will be at 9:00 a.m., visitation 9:30 to 10:30 followed by Catholic mass.
